Description
Most Icelandic names are impossible for me to say, let alone remember! So i'll just say that this is a black sand beach adjacent to a glacial lagoon. Although I was at this beach only twice, I'm sure that you would see different ice sculptures washed up on the beach every day. In the previous photos that I have seen from this beach, I never really could tell how big the ice chunks were. Now having been there, I saw that they come in all shapes and sizes. The two chunks of ice in this photo are the size of small cars! To shoot here, you have to pay very close attention the the tide, the size of the surf, other chunks of ice on the beach, as well as the ice washing up on the shore. It would be very easy to lose your footing with the fast movement of the waves and be sucked out into the frigid water, or be injured by the sharp ice moving with the tide. Another factor to consider when shooting here, is the direction of the light. As in all photography, the phrase its all about the light hold true here. As you walk around the ice formations, every step you take, makes the formation look differentfrom flat and lifeless, to a glowing sapphire crystal. Shooting with the right light can really make the ice come alive. The sight of the sun filtering through the ice on the beach is one of those magical ones that you will never forget.
